I’ve decided to give up pro football for awhile. Maybe for good. For me, it’s a big deal. I love football, everything from sandlot to the NFL. But the recent developments have made me stop and think about the sport which I enjoy watching. And I have come to a few realizations: Many (not all) of the guys who play pro football have very little in the way of good character. They demean women, are promiscuous beyond belief, use drugs and are violent to women, children and other people. Again, not all, but many. WAY too many. Many (not all) can barely put 2 sentences together and would have never made it to college if it weren’t for the fact that could play football. Many (not all) have no idea on how to handle money as a responsible adult. (probably because they aren’t really adults)
And the owners, coaches and administrative personnel seem to be obsessed with winning and making money, at any cost. I seriously doubt that the Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson, Greg Hardy episodes would have been a blip on the NFL radar were it not for a few decent non-football individuals who stood up and said, “ENOUGH!” The way that these recents cases have been handled is a farce. Decent human beings don’t act and REACT like this. And I get it. It all comes down to winning and money.
I have my faults, believe me. But I think I am a person of good character and decent morals. I don’t hit women, nor do I condone those who do. You hit a woman like Ray Rice did, you belong in a cage because you are NOT a man, you’re an animal. You beat a 4 year child until he bleeds like Adrian Peterson, you’re not a man, you’re an animal. And YOU belong in a cage. And don’t give me that bullshit about it’s “how I wuz raised,” or “I’m from the south, that’s how we do things.” I’m a southerner, born and bred. I was raised to be a gentleman, to treat women and little children with respect and care. And while I got more than a few whippings, I never had scars, or was left bleeding or had defensive wounds on my hands from my father, grandfather or other adult.
These kind of people are not the kind of people I want to support in any fashion. So, I’m not going watch pro football for the foreseeable future. I may even give up college ball. I may find I really miss it. Or, I may realize that there are better ways to spend Saturday and Sunday afternoons in the fall and winter.
Sorry for the rant. Just speaking from my heart.
